White Plains, N.Y. -Tina Charles scored 34 points and snatched 10 rebounds and New York beat the Dallas Wings 94-89 for Liberty coach Katie Smith’s first victory.
New York was outscored 11-0 to start the game led by Skylar Diggins-Smith and trailed until Shavonte Zellous took two of the dribble and scored to tie the game at 76 with 3:58 remaining in regulation. Charles gave the Liberty its first lead on their next trip down the court and she finished with 18 points in the quarter and was a forced on the boards.
Liberty Shavonte Zellous chipped in 19 points with 9 assists for New York (1-2). Tina Charles has seven career games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Wings (2-3) 6′ 8″ Elizabeth Cambage had 28 points and 16 rebounds was a major problem for the Liberty in the first half in the paint. Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 20 points with five 3-pointers and seven assists started the game 4-5 shooting in the first half but Smith’s adjustments with Nurse slowed the all-star guard down in the second half.
Diggins-Smith made four 3-pointers in the first quarter and she finished the half with 16 points to help Dallas build a 46-37 lead.
The matchup marked the 65th meeting between the Liberty and the Wings. Overall the series is even 32-32.In 2017 the Wings went 0-3 against the Liberty, losing two games at home and one in New York.
In the initial meeting last season, Tina Charles led all scorers with 36 points, while Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 19 points in a 93-82 Liberty win.
The Liberty will travel to the Hoosier state to play the Indiana Fever at Bankers Life Fieldhouse for a 7 p.m. start time.
